200 delegates at the ICM Regional Conference in Dubai!
e ICM Combined Regional Conference for the Eastern Mediterranean, South-East Asia and Western Pacific Regions, which took place in Dubai from 6-8 September brought approximately 200 delegates from 37 countries to collaborate, present, share and connect as one unified network of midwives.
The Conference was a resounding success from the Opening Ceremony, where Princess Muna al-Hussein of Jordan greeted the conference attendees and eloquently affirmed the importance of midwives coming together from diverse backgrounds to serve the needs of women and newborns, support one another as midwives and make a positive impact on the world. Her Royal Highness was followed by a keynote address from Western Pacific Midwife Sue Bree, who spoke on the importance of equity and Respectful Maternity Care in midwifery practice.
The Johnson & Johnson Awards Ceremony saw four magnificent midwives recognised for their contributions to Education (awarded to Hilma Shikwambi) and Research (awarded to Elgonda Bekker and Tewodros Seymoun), concluding with the Marie Goubran Agent of Change Award (awarded to Kusmayra Ambarwati).
Thank you to all the attendees of ICM’s two workshops: ‘Respectful Maternity Care’ and ‘Be Bold. Be Brave: Advocacy for Midwives’. Your engagement in these sessions was inspirational and empowering in every sense of the world.
Congratulations to Johnson & Johnson, the Premium Sponsor of the Conference, for the success of their ‘First Touch™: Midwife Ambassadors’ workshop – we look forward to continuing the momentum built in this workshop through our Midwife Ambassadors Challenge, where we are encouraging midwives to send creative and interesting demonstrations of how they will share the lessons learned from the workshop in their practise.
We continued our commitment to the What Women Want campaign by creating a wall in the main hall, where conference attendees were encouraged to post their one main request for quality reproductive and maternal health care services. By the end of the conference, we had more responses than we did wall space… So to everyone who raised their voices to be heard: thank you
The Dhow Cruise was a fun and social evening where attendees could network and enjoy the lovely views, a pleasant breeze in the Dubai heat, and we were delighted to conclude the conference with three fantastic keynote speeches from Massoma Jafari of Afghanistan, ICM Board Member for the South-East Asia Region Emi Nurjasmi Indomo and ICM President Franka Cadée.
